a girl can dream: [black & gold]

[layout for by way of ney]

I'm launching a new little feature called "a girl can dream." The things that I love are usually two things: unique and/or practical. I love things are that that are unique because they are either vintage or handmade. I also like practical things that won't break the bank, are comfortable and make sense for my lifestyle with still looking like me. These two pieces are both of those things. This gorgeous jacket by EmersonMade is practical in that it is a basic black. It could be worn over just about anything. With blue jeans and a white tee or over a classy dress. These amazing Lulu Frost rings I've had my eye on for a while. I love how unique they are and that you can choose the perfect combo to mean something to you. They are a bit pricey but I love that I could have one 5, I am Chanel No. 5 after all, or a stack of our anniversary date. Wouldn't you love both of these?

5 things: nails

[layout and choices for by way of ney]

1} Kiehl's Ultimate Strength Hand Salve: this stuff is deliciously amazing and doesn't leave your hands feeling greasy at all. Can't say enough about it!

2] A basic pink nude: I love OPI's Bubble Bath & Essie's Mademoiselle or Adore-A-Ball

3] Essie's Chinchilly grey polish: I can't wear this without someone commenting on how much they love it. Even guys!

4] OPI's Give Me Moor: a great dark color. I love it for my toes and especially for this time of year.

5] Deboran Lippman polish: never disappoints! Her glitter polishes are amazing! My sister loves her multicolored Happy Birthday polish. I love this gold Boom Boom Pow polish. So fun to put over any other color or by itself.

treasure hunting

If you've ever been to a swapmeet you know that it feels like treasure hunting! Sometimes I go in knowing exactly what I am looking for and sometimes I go in just looking for things that catch my eye and make me all giddy with a vision about what they could become or where they will go in our home. If I find something at a swapmeet (or a garage sale or thift store for that matter) I have to have a vision for it...or else it stays right where I found it.  This past weekend, I ventured down to the swapmeet in Long Beach with a good friend of mine. After we got home we were talking about how our other friends don't seem to love this stuff as much as we do. We love going into the swapmeet and helping each other to find a vision for what it is that catches our eye. This time, we went in with mini lists of what we were looking for. None of what I came home with was on my list but I spent under $75 and scored some amazing finds! I am so excited for them to be incorporated into our home.

Here are my finds:

[temari, wood block letters (my initials), a vintage leather messenger bag, vintage tissue party decorations]
The vintage tissue decorations I bought from an adorable older woman who was almost as excited to sell them to me as I was to buy them from her. She even ended up giving me two (not pictured here) for free so I was able to give one away and keep one (a pumpkin) to use in another setting. I love the different textures and patterns of these amazing, old pieces.

VISION: The best part is that my girlfriend bought the others that were left and so now we have lots to share, to use at a party or just stare at. Don't they just give you joy! I can't wait to use them at a party or maybe, one day, in a nursery.

[I love the contrast stitching of this caramel colored leather bag. Plus, it's in great shape & it even fits my computer!]
VISION: I may end up using this bag for the typical bag like things...carrying reading material, computer etc. However the main idea is that it would be placed on a console table and used as a mail sorter. It has perfect compartments for envelopes, stamps, pens, notebooks and incoming and outgoing mail. Isn't that a fun idea?!?!

[How could I not fall into with the delicate threads of these temari?]
Temari: a Japanese folk art form that is five or six centuries old. They were originally made by mothers or grandmothers for children to play with. They were originally made from the remnants of kimonos. Eventually they transformed from toys to an art form. They are now highly valued and cherished gifts symbolizing loyalty and deep friendship. Tradition is now for a mother to make one for her daughter as a New Year's gift. They are also defined as hime-temari to bring good fortune to the person who keeps them.

VISION: When I first saw this I was simply blown away by their beauty! I couldn't deny how amazing the delicate layers of silk were. I immediately knew I didn't just want one. I also immediately knew I wanted ones that differed in color and pattern but still worked together. I could instantly envision them in our home as Christmas decorations...now I just think they are so gorgeous I want them out year round. I am hoping that one day, when the man and I take our long dreamed about trip to Japan, we'll be able to see these made in person and bring home more to add to the collection.
[It is not often that you can have your initials actually read right facing forward. This "b" would actually print as a "d" and the "c" is flipped upside down so that it reads facing forward...score!]
Wood block letters have been used in printing for a long time. They have become more popular recently to use in all types of decorating.

VISION: I am just so stoked that I found the two letters of my first and last name and that they read forward instead of backward. The vision is to frame them floating in a shadow box frame over linen.

As usual, the swapmeet was a hit! Even if I didn't come home with anything I would be happy just walking around with a girlfriend and people watching. Oh the people of the swapmeet! I overheard one lady say, "Oh! I have chili dog all over my face!" Always a good time!

sick grey days...

This is what happens when you're home sick for two days straight: lots of time on the computer, heaps of tissue, reading a book full of wisdom, lots of tea (with tags of genius insight), finding the little things (yellow mums in this case) that makes you happy around the house, eating lots of soup that the husband brings home for you, watching movies on Netflix Live like [pelada], a documentary about pick up soccer games in 25 countries around the world, and lots of work updating real life work things on the computer that I never have time to get around to.

FALL: boots with high socks

[layout for by way of ney]

In this post about fall, I mentioned that one of the things I was ready for about fall was wearing boots with high socks. Here are some adorable and cozy socks to layer over your skinny jeans or tights and some amazing boots. I love that these ones are all stylish and practical with a flat heel that means you could wear them all day long.

Find some socks like these at Urban Outfitters, Patagonia, or Woolrich & boots like these at Nordstrom, Frye, Steve Madden

Happy fall booting!

il tramezzino lunch

I'll leave you with this for the weekend! It is supposed to be sunny and still, yes, still, warm in LA this weekend. If you are around town I suggest to try out one of my favorite restaurants, Il Tramezzino in Beverly Hills. Have a seat outside if there are tables, order an iced vanilla latte, and people watch. The people watching here is good! You have a front row seat on Canon Road of all the passersby. Do be prepared for some honking though because these rich people in the Range Rovers and Mercedes have places to go and they aren't afraid to lay on the horn.

[enjoying sitting outside and people watching with my iced latte]

[yummy]

[grilled chicken breast sandwich with sun dried tomatoes, provolone, and pesto]

[prosciutto, mozzarella, fresh tomato, basil]

[heaven from a panini press]

[nutella croissant]

It is seriously so good that I will make a trip into Beverly Hills just to enjoy it! If you aren't in the area maybe this will inspire you to make something like it at home this weekend!

beauty CULTure

Alright ladies, months ago (here & here) I posted about the Beauty CULTure exhibit at the Annenberg Space for Photography. Have you been yet? If you haven't been, you need to go. Here are a couple of reasons:

1] It's EYE OPENING! Majorly helps you to expand what you see as beauty and what lengths people should, or shouldn't, go to obtain it.

2] It's free!

3] It's an interactive, gorgeous exhibit and not one you have to be at all day to feel like you've got the whole experience!

4] It's pretty central to everyone in LA, nestled into Century City.

5] It closes in just over a month!

Have you already been?

Yes, what did you think? I was so conflicted about feeling like the beautiful women were in fact beautiful after seeing the documentary about how we are influenced by the industry as a whole.  It kinda made be feel guilty about seeing the models and works of art.

No. Do you think you'll go? If you do, will you let me know what you think?

halloween baby!

Holy crap! This is quite possibly the best costume I've ever seen...ever. It's no secret that I love this guy so when I saw this costume via Cup of Jo I giggle out loud a little. I'm pretty sure that if I have a son one day, he'll wear something like this year round! It just looks so cozy too. The way this little guy is playing with the whiskers doesn't make it any easy to deny this being adorable.

If you have a son, maybe I can borrow him for the holiday? Do you plan on wearing a costume? What about the little ones in your life? One of my best friend's sons is going to be Woody from Toy Story which is pretty cute too!

DIY: wine + chocolate

Remember this post about wedding shower invites for my dear friend? Well, here are the results from the wine & chocolate night that we planned for her shower. I made tags for the goodies to match the invites and tied them on with sparkly ribbon. Each of the goodies had a little saying underneath like, CHOCOLATE DIPPED OREOS... "Health food might be good for the conscious but Oreos taste a hell of a lot better!" -Robert Redford. Or, CHOCOLATE DIPPED RICE CRISPIE TREATS...Snap. Crackle. Pop. Quieted only by coco. It was really fun to come up with the tag lines! The favorites were the chocolate covered pretzels and the best surprise was the salty potato chips to dip in the chocolate fountain. Red wine, Prosecco, Pellegrino, and, of course, milk to wash down all the chocolaty goodness!

[milk...cause it does a body good]

[two salty, one sweet]

[gotta get your fruit servings in...even if they're drenched in chocolate]

[DIY S'mores]

[mmmm]

5 things: makeup

[layout and choices for by way of ney]
I am not a big makeup girl. That said, I also have days where I think, "I'm really glad I'm not a guy because today I really need a little makeup to freshen myself up. On those days when I really need and extra boost to get me out the door, these lovelies are my little lifesavers.

1] Tarte cheek stain in Blushing Bride

2] Maybelline Define-a-Brow in Light Blonde
(because my hair is naturally very light and I have fair skin, my eyebrows are practically see through...this helps!)

3] Bobbi Brown eye shadow in Slate is the perfect mix of a warm grey

4] bareMinerals Faux Tan bronzer is perfect for an all over glow on your face when you haven't been in the sun
(or when you've been good and have been wearing sunscreen)

5] Bobbi Brown lip gloss which I have in three colors
(aubergine, petal, & buff) that I choose from depending on the day

What are your favorite makeup finds?

Also, if you missed the other 5 things, by way of ney, posts you can find more of my favorites, like this one, by clicking on "5 things" under the features. Or by clicking this link.

the fruit of the farmers market

As promised in this post, I'm ready to deliver on the "fruit" of what I purchased at last weeks farmers market. I love having fresh flowers around. It always brightens the whole room, and my whole mood. Also, having ingredients straight from the farmers always inspires me to make something new and wholesome. The deliciousness of my fall farmers...

[a full vase in the front window...ahhhh]

[the pink, yellow, green combo is so bright and happy]

[a floating flower is the perfect solution to a broken blossom]

[an unbelievably delightful piece of whole grain toast with peanut butter,
a swirl of nutella, and crumbles of my raw cashews]

[my crispy, crunchy, juicy pear, sharp cheddar cheese and a small dish of cashews]

[how can you deny those freckles?]

[prep of my pluots with a gorgeous dish my amazing sis made]

[the flesh of the pluots are amazingly saturated in color]

[dinosaur egg & flavor king pluots, crumbles of goat cheese, fresh blueberries, raw walnuts,
and a drizzle of reduced balsamic (the best addition to most things)]

[a beautifully glazed dish and a glaze of reduced balsamic]

[mmm...this was the favorite of my creations]

All-in-all, I was so happy and delighted with the way my snacks came out. There is nothing better than wanting something to eat and wanting a quick snack and being able to walk into the kitchen and come out with something this delicious.

peas in a pod

You know when someone takes a picture at dinner, and both of your reactions is to make a face, that you were,
in fact, made for each other.
